The United States Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs has scheduled an open session hearing titled “Stopping the Flow of Fentanyl: Public Awareness and Legislative Solutions.” The hearing, to be held on Thursday, January 11, 2024, will address the issue of fentanyl trafficking and its impact on public health and safety.

The witnesses for the hearing include Jason “Jelly Roll” DeFord, an artist and philanthropist; Patrick Yoes, the National President of the Fraternal Order of Police; and Christopher J. Urben, the Managing Director of Nardello & Co and a retired Assistant Special Agent in Charge at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s Special Operations Division. Additional witnesses may be added at a later date.

The committee will discuss public awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and potential legislative solutions to stop its flow. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, has been responsible for a significant increase in overdose deaths in recent years. It is often mixed with other drugs without the user’s knowledge, leading to accidental overdoses.

The committee aims to address the challenges associated with fentanyl trafficking and explore measures to prevent its distribution. This includes examining the role of law enforcement agencies, increasing public education and awareness campaigns, and supporting legislation to strengthen penalties for fentanyl-related offenses.

The hearing will be webcast live and can be accessed on the committee’s website. Closed captioning services will be available for individuals with disabilities who require auxiliary aids or services.
