Ecobank Ghana has announced the appointment of Abena Osei-Poku as its new managing director and Regional Executive for the Anglophone West Africa (AWA) region of the Ecobank Group. Osei-Poku brings with her over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry, with expertise in corporate and investment banking, business banking, and risk management.

Osei-Poku began her career as a private banker with First Atlantic Merchant Bank before moving to Standard Chartered Bank Ghana, where she served as the head of the Group Special Assets Risk Management (SARM) department and later as the director for Global Corporates, Wholesale Bank. She then joined Barclays Bank Ghana as the executive director for commercial banking, responsible for corporate and business banking.

In 2016, Osei-Poku joined Absa Bank Group (formerly Barclays Bank) as co-regional head of coverage, corporate and investment banking, overseeing East and West Africa. She was later appointed CEO and managing director of Absa Bank Ghana. Osei-Poku is an accomplished pan-African business leader and has previously sat on the boards of telecommunications, banking, commerce, and hospitality companies.

In addition to her new role at Ecobank Ghana, Osei-Poku currently serves as the chairperson of the advisory board of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana and the outgoing chairperson for the council of the Ghana Stock Exchange. She is also an honorary member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and holds an MBA from Manchester Business School and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Statistics from the University of Ghana.

Osei-Poku’s appointment comes after the retirement of the former managing director of Ecobank Ghana, Dan Sackey, and the immediate past acting managing director, Joana Mensah.
